Why Staying in Cashew Business Is the Hardest Part

The cashew business today is very different from what is was 10 or 15 years ago.

Back then, starting a cashew business meant having a factory, access to raw materials, a production team, and a significant amount of capital. It wasn’t something most people could easily enter. Today, things have changed.

If you have ever worked in the cashew industry or even if you are simply a customer, you have probably noticed it too. With just a few seconds on Google or any e-commerce platform, you can find hundreds of cashew suppliers and brands. This change has opened the door for more entrepreneurs, more creative ideas, and far more choices comes a new challenge. The more options people have, the harder it is to be remembered.

Being seen is difficult. Being remembered is even harder.

You may have experienced this yourself. Whenever you want to buy something, you probably search on Google, browse TikTok, or check marketplaces like Amazon, Shopee or Lazada (in Vietnam). Within seconds, hundreds of products appear. Online shopping has made buying easier than ever. Customers can compare prices, read reviews, and evaluate return policies before making a decision. For customers, that’s incredibly convenient. For businesses, however, it means something entirely different. Getting customers to notice your brand is even harder.

A company can become popular very quickly, but earning enough trust for customers to return five or ten years later is a completely different story.

Not every business that starts will last.

If you pay attention, you will see this happening in almost every industry. Every year, new stories open. New brands are launched. New factories are built. Yet during the same period, many businesses quietly disappear. Some close their doors. Some sell their factories. Others simply fade away as quickly as they appeared.

Running a business has never been about surviving for a few months. The real challenge is maintaining consistent quality, healthy cash flow, loyal customers, and a reliable team. Those are the things that determine whether a business can truly stand the test of time.

A conversation that made us think

Not long ago, Dong Phu had the opportunity to meet a business partner from Canada. During your conversation, he shared an interesting perspective.

In Canada, starting a food business is far from easy. The licensing process, food safety requirements, and regularly standards are strict from the very beginning. However, once a company is operating, government policies tend to remain relatively stable. Changes usually happen gradually, giving businesses enough time to adapt.

Vietnam is different. Starting a business can be more accessible, but staying in business requires a different kind of strength. You need to stay flexible. New regulations appear. Markets change. Customers preferences evolve. Packaging needs updating. Products need improving. Sales channels continue to shift. Something that works today may need to be redesigned just a few months later. It can be stressful at times. But perhaps that is also makes Vietnam such a dynamic market, one with more uncertainty, yet also more opportunities.

Making a good product is only the beginning.

There was a time when producing a great product was enough. Today, that’s no longer the whole story. People working in the cashew business need to learn far more than manufacturing. We need to understand which markets prefer larger kernels and which prioritize competitive pricing. We need to build a brand, tell our story, develop a professional website, sell through digital platforms, work with international buyers, and stay updated with export regulations in different countries.

Sometimes it feels like working as a farmer, an engineer, a salesperson, and a technology learner all a the same time. Because if the market keeps changing while we keep doing things the old way, it’s easy to be left behind.

Dong Phu chooses to adapt without losing what matters

People sometimes ask us:

” Why does Dong Phu invest in its website?”

“Why join Alibaba when you already have customers?”

“Why create a company profile?”

We are still doing the same work we have always done. We are simply learning how to tell our story more clearly. For many years, Dong Phu worked quietly behind the supply chain, producing cashews, fulfilling orders, and exporting products. Very few people knew where our factory was located or who stood behind every batch we carefully produced.  Today, we want to become more visible., not because we only want to sell more cashews, but because we want to build trust. We hope they understand how we work, what we value, and why we have chosen to stay committed to this industry.

If one day you think about Vietnamese cashews and Dong Phu becomes one of the names that comes to mind, that would mean a great deal to us.
